Assessment Review Period

Assessment reviews and Board of Equalization appeals are no longer being accepted for 2012.

Review of an Assessment

During the assessment review period in January any property owner can contact the Assessor's Office to discuss their proposed assessment. You may request a review of your assessment. An appraiser will contact you within a few days of your initial call.

Assessment Appeal

Prior to initiating an informal appeal, read the assessment notice carefully for instructions about deadlines and filing procedures, and if you have any questions, call the Assessor’s Office at (804) 365-6029. In addition, please refer to the County's GIS database of all properties.  This site includes pertinent information for each and every parcel in the County.

Assessment Appeal Process

Step 1 - Informal Appeal
The first step in an appeal is an informal meeting or telephone call with an appraiser in the Assessor’s Office. Appeals are most often settled at the informal level.  However, if you are not satisfied with the results of your informal review, you have more opportunities in the following steps.

Step 2 - Formal Appeal

The second step is to submit a formal appeal to the Hanover County Board of Equalization by March 15 of the current year.

Step 3 - Circuit Court
If the results of your formal appeal are not satisfactory to you, the third and final step would be to take your case to the Hanover County Circuit Court.
