U.S. 360, Lewistown Interchange, U.S. 33, Pouncey Tract Road
Are Board's Top Priorities
December 2, 2003
The Board of Supervisors,
represented by vice chairman Timothy E. Ernst of the Ashland District,
has asked the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) to set the
following priorities for primary and interstate road projects in
Hanover County:
- Widen U.S. Rt. 360 between I-295 and Walnut Grove Road (Route
615). This project is the top-ranked road improvement priority
in the entire Richmond Region as identified by the Metropolitan
Planning Organization (MPO). Engineering for this project is underway;
however, no funds have been allocated for construction.
- Construct interim improvements to the I-95/Lewistown Road (Route
802) interchange. Hanover County has allocated over $2.2 million
in federal MPO funding to construct interim improvements to the
I-95/Lewistown Road interchange. The conceptual design for these
improvements was developed from an extensive traffic analysis
for the Atlee-Lewistown Road area; Hanover is asking VDOT to expedite
the administration and implementation of this project to improve
the safety of the interchange. Hanover's design concept utilizes
the existing right of way and coordinated traffic signalization
to "flush" traffic from I-95.
- Widen U.S. Route 33 to 4-lane divided between the Henrico County
Line and Ashland Road (Route 623). Route 33 has been the site
of numerous fatal accidents in recent years. The widening of Route
33 was once funded in the Six-Year Plan but funding was withdrawn
in 2001 due to State budget cuts. Hanover County has used MPO
funding and County road proffers to make the existing two-lane
road safer by adding shoulder wedging and reflectorized pavement
markers from the end of the four-lane section to Ashland Road,
and the entire road length is to include these safety improvements
next year.
- Improve Route 271 between Rockville Road (Route 622) and Ashland
Road (Route 623). Right of way acquisition for an improved two-lane
road was completed this past year, however no funds have been
allocated for construction.
The CTB establishes priorities for the State's primary and interstate
road projects. Ernst spoke at the public hearing for the Richmond
District, held Dec. 1 in Petersburg.
