"Parson's Cause" Re-enactment on Saturday
A free re-enactment of the Parson's Cause case that propelled Patrick Henry to fame will be held this Saturday, August 13, at the historic Hanover Courthouse that served as the real-life setting for the event.
Henry's arguments in the "Parson's Cause" took placed on December 1, 1763. During this case, Henry thundered against the King of England's disavowal of a law passed by the Virginia House of Burgesses. The case transformed Henry from an obscure country lawyer to a political leader and established part of the foundation for the American Revolution.
The re-enactment will begin at 11 a.m. and last 45 minutes. Attendees are asked to participate by serving as jurors, parties to the case, gentlemen justices or parsons. Each attendee is also asked to render his or her verdict by way of ballot. Door prizes will be awarded.
The re-enactments are staged by The Parson's Cause Foundation Inc., a non-profit corporation whose mission is to sponsor re-enactments of and promote the historical importance of The Parson's Cause.
