March 8, 2010

Pouncey Tract Road – The right shoulder of Pouncey Tract Road from Rockville Road/Walnut Grove Drive to Ashland Road will be closed in both directions from 7 p.m.-5 a.m. through March 12 for construction activities.  This project involves widening and paving the existing shoulders six feet to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians. In addition, the contractor will upgrade road drainage structures and make adjustments to the road alignment to improve sight distance. Completion is expected in May 2011.

I-295 south – An oversized tractor trailer carrying fiberglass piping (duct work) is scheduled to travel Monday through Thursday nights (March 8-11) between northern Virginia and Charles City County through March 30. The 150-mile transport will begin nightly at midnight down I-95 south in northern Virginia to I-295 south and I-64 east in Richmond to Route 106 south (Exit 211) in New Kent County. The load is expected to arrive to its final destination—a barge on the James River at Shirley Plantation in Charles City County—by 5 a.m.

The Virginia Department of Transportation and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles has coordinated with the transportation company to develop a route that will minimize the impact to drivers, local businesses and residents. Every load will be legal height and weight. However, the load will be 26 feet wide (the standard interstate lane width is 12 feet).

Drivers on I-95 south and I-295 south near the transport may experience minor delays. Once the load enters I-64 east in Richmond, it will block both eastbound lanes; on Route 106 in New Kent/Charles City County, it will block both north and southbound travel lanes. Drivers can expect major delays on these routes from approximately midnight to 5 a.m. The load will not cross the Benjamin Harrison Bridge in Charles City County.

Each oversized load convoy will include four certified pilot cars and two Virginia State Police escorts for traffic control. Once the load arrives at its destination, the tractor will return to Maryland as a legal-sized tractor trailer.

Information about the transport operation will be posted on Virginia’s 511 travel information system, which is available by dialing 511 or on the Web at www.511Virginia.org.
