Street Name Signs
Hanover County reinstalls missing or vandalized street name signs throughout the County.
To report a missing or damaged street name sign call (804) 365-6181. Please provide the following information:
- Street sign names (i.e., intersection of Mechanicsville Turnpike and Lee Davis Road);
- Whether the signs are missing, but the pole is onsite or the whole unit (i.e., signs and pole) is gone;
- If you report a sign as being down, please indicate if the signs themselves are still onsite as well as the pole, along with the color of the street signs (brown or green);
- A contact name and telephone number where you may be reached.
The County only installs wooden 4-inch by 4-inch posts and street signs that meet Federal guidelines. Once the street name sign has been repaired or replaced, please contact our office at the number listed above to let us know that the issue has been resolved.
Who is responsible?
In new subdivisions (including rural subdivisions), the developer of the property is responsible for the initial installation and maintenance of the street name signs , including any bonding provisions required by the County, until the roads are accepted by the County and/or State. In addition, some Homeowner Associations retain responsibility for sign and post maintenance.
All developers must meet the county street name specifications (which have been developed in accordance with the Virginia Department of Transportation’s standards) in order for the County to assume responsibility of the signs in the event of theft or vandalism.
